The Allahabad High Court today sought to know from Uttar Pradesh government what was its policy with regard to providing compensation and medical assistance to acid attack victims in the state.

A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Yashwant Varma, passed the order on a Public Interest Litigation filed by an NGO "Muhim" wherein it has been contended that a number of women in Meerut district have suffered acid attacks in the past one year.

The petitioner has alleged that the state government has failed to come to the aid of acid attack victims by way of monetary compensation and medical assistance for which there was a pressing need since many of those who have suffered grievous injuries in such incidents are not financially sound.

Directing the state government to file its reply, the court fixed May 2 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
