The Bombay High Court today sought to know from the Maharashtra government if it proposes to formulate a scheme or guidelines to tackle with illegal constructions and dilapidated buildings across the state.

A division bench of Justices P V Hardas and Revati Dere was hearing a PIL filed by an NGO, Conscious Citizens Forum, seeking direction to the government and corporations of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to take steps to stop mushrooming of illegal constructions.

The petition was filed after a building collapsed in Mumbra, killing over 20 persons and injuring several others.

"The petitioner is aggrieved by the inaction on the part of the government in formulating a policy decision regarding illegal buildings and construction across the state. No action is taken regarding numerous dilapidated buildings too," the PIL claims.

The High Court directed the state government to inform it within three weeks on whether it proposes to formulate any scheme or guidelines.

"Do something about this issue. Daily we see buildings collapsing," the court said.
