The Madras High Court has directed the assistant commissioner of Chennai corporation to remove encroachments on a public pathway at Pandaram Street in Vadapalani.

The petitioner P Kumaragurubaran alleged that G Palani and Murugan had illegally encroached on a public platform near Nagathamman temple in Vadapalani resulting in frequent traffic snarls.

The petitioner claimed no action was taken on his complaint to the civic body and sought a direction to authorities to take action.

The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Satyanarayana, said "We are surprised how any construction could have been made without sanction of the corporation and as to why the corporation did not attend to the issue when the construction was on or at least when a complaint was made."

Directing the assistant commissioner of Chennai corporation to take requisite action, the bench adjourned the case to March 4 for filing compliance with the order.
