Press Trust of India Kochi
The Kerala High Court today directed the state Food Safety Commissioner to find out whether cassis, which resembles cinnamon and alleged to be sold in the market, was fit for human consumption.

Justice A M Muhamed Mustaque ordered Food Safety officials to take sample of cassia, an aromatic bark, and find out whether it was suitable for human consumption and complete the exercise in two weeks.

The Judge was hearing a petition by one Leonard John who alleged that cassia, which is cheaper than cinnamon, is prohibited in Europe as studies have revealed that its consumption causes cerebral haemorrhage.

He also asked the Commissioner to report whether any steps had been taken for prohibiting sale of cassia.
