Press Trust of India Chennai
Madras High Court has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to look into allegations that unqualified teachers and other staff were being appointed by Tiruvalluvar University in Vellore District of Tamil Nadu.

Passing interim orders on a petition, a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sathish K Agnihotri and Justice K Ravichandrabaabu directed the UGC to file a report in the form of affidavit in two weeks after conducting an inspection.

The court directed the UGC to examine and verify as to whether the teachers and other employees were appointed in violations of its regulations, as alleged by petitioner I Elangovan, a professor.

Elangovan, also an advocate, pleaded for a direction to constitute a committee of experts outside of the Thiruvalluvar University to re-assess the qualification of all teachers appointed in the colleges affiliated to the university.

He also sought to verify the measures taken for the maintenance of standards in higher education and consequently take appropriate action as per law.
