Madras High Court today directed the Fee Fixation Committee to re-examine the Madurai based Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute's appeal for levying higher fees from students for admissions.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam on petition filed by the institution, asked The Fee Fixation Committee to re-examine the case and said the exercise should be carried out within two months.
The Institution submitted the documents to the Fee Fixation Committee to determine Rs 15,00,000 per student per year for the students studying the MBBS course.

The Committee has uniformly fixed Rs 2,30,000 per student per year, which was challenged by the college in the court.
Secretary, Health and Family Welfare Department, J Radhakrishnan who filed the Counter affidavit and personally present in the Court through Additional Advocate General P H Arvind Pandian submitted that the committee verified the expenditure statement submitted and disallowed expenditures under the heads of Bank interest on loan, Consumables to Hostel of Students, and Advertisement and fixed a fee of Rs 2,50,000 of the college.
It was further submitted that the expenditures such as capital expenditure, expenditure to run hospital, transport, depreciation and advertisements were disallowed by the committee.
The bench which disposed of the petition directed the fee fixation committee to re-examine the case of the college.
The Fee Fixation committee was constituted as per the directions of the Supreme Court by the State Government under the head of a retired Judge Justice N V Balasubramanian and Health secretary and others as members for fixation of the fee to Self-financing Professional colleges in Tamil Nadu.
