An advocate has filed a plea in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to authorities to consider her representation on the arduous nature of duties discharged by members of police force "which drives them at time to the precipice of despair and self-extinction."
When the plea came up today, a division bench of Justices S Manikumar and Subramonia Prasad directed the DGP to pass orders on C.S. Rajalakshmi's representation within six weeks.
The petitioner cited examples such as the death of Maduravoyal police Inspector Periyapandiyan while attempting to arrest robbers in Rajasthan and suicide of Arunraj of armed police force who committed suicide when he was on duty at former Chief Minister Jayalalithaas burial site.
The advocate submitted that such incidents of police personnel committing suicides have increased.
She submitted that the main cause for these incidents were stress and exhaustion due to work without rest besides non-availability of leave.
The petitioner said she made a representation to authorities on March 12 and moved the court when she did not get a response.
