HC directs govt to consider plea on cleaning Vaigai dam

The Madras High Court today ordered the state government to consider the representation seeking a direction to remove accumulated silt in Vaigai Dam which is source of drinking water and irrigation in five districts, including Madurai.

Justice R Sudhakar and Justice V M Velumani of Madurai bench directed PWD officials to consider the representation made by PIL petitioner K K Ramesh, Managing trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre and closed the PIL.

The petitioner submitted that the dam was built in 1959, and for the past some years it had not been maintained properly.

Besides Madurai, the Vaigai is a source of drinking water and irrigation for Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, and Dindigul.
