The Madras High Court today directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide proper treatment to eight persons, who sustained injuries in the violence during jallikattu protests here on January 23.
Justice R Mahadevan gave the direction on a criminal original petition moved by I Perumal, father of P Talaimani and seven others, who submitted that they have been severely assaulted by the police suspecting their participation in the violence.
Perumal submitted that on January 23, his son along with 28 others, was forcibly taken by police to Mylapore police station in the city on the suspicion that they participated in the violence.
Submitting that police arrested them and after beating them severely remanded them in judicial custody by foisting false cases, Perumal contended that only after intervention of a magistrate, his son was admitted to a hospital.
But others were forcibly remanded in judicial custody, he submitted.
Pleading that the petitioners immediately requires medical attention, Perumal wanted the court to direct the authorities to provide proper medical treatment to them.
He also sought for a direction to the state government to order for a judicial inquiry into the violence and award Rs 25 lakh compensation to the petitioners for the injuries suffered to them.
The erring police officials should be suspended and departmental actions must be initiated against them, Perumal submitted.
The judge ordered the government to provide for proper treatment to the petitioners and posted the matter for further hearing along with other similar petitions.
