The Madras High Court has directed the Madurai city police to conduct a probe into a complaint that a seven-year-old girl had been allegedly sold by her father, and submit a report on October 20.
When the petition by Bargath Nisha came up for hearing recently, the court directed ADSP Murugesan to investigate the case after registering an FIR under Care and Protection of Children Act and submit a report on October 20.
The petitioner had submitted that owing to differences, her husband left her along with their daughter in 2013.

She also submitted that she had lodged a complaint with police, but to no avail, which is why she was prompted to move the Court seeking a direction to produce her daughter.
The girl's father submitted that he had handed over his daughter to his parents, who had admitted her to a children's home.
However, the representatives of the home denied that she had been admitted to their home, following which another complaint was lodged by the girl's paternal grandfather.
Condemning the police for inaction on two complaints, the court directed the ADSP to investigate the case.
