Madras High Court today directed the Sivaganga district police to provide protection for wedding reception of a Thiruvananthapuram-based ISRO scientist who got married to an engineer after the couple's parents dropped the marriage proposal allegedly due to differences over dowry.

Justice G M Akbarali of Madurai Bench directed police to give protection to the couple till March 14, a day after the reception is to be held.

The petitioner submitted that their engagement was held on October 20 last year and their parents had participated in the ceremony and also signed the relevant documents.

Later misunderstanding cropped up and their parents decided to drop the marriage plan. But they loved each other and got married on February 2 this year and were residing in Sivaganga, the petitioner said.

But on February 11, his parents with the help of a retired DSP gave a complaint as if he had been kidnapped by his wife and members of her family members, the petitioner alleged and claimed they also made attempts to kidnap him.

He felt that function would be stopped if the police did not give protection and prayed the court for a direction to police in this regard.
