HC directs shifting of Samayapuram temple elephant to camp

The Madras High Court Bench here Wedneday ordered shifting of the ailing elephant of famous Sri Mariamman temple at Samayapuram in Tiruchirappalli district to the Mudumalai Theppakadu camp for the jumbos.

The elephant Masini, donated to the temple by then chief minister late J Jayalaithaa in 2016, is now undergoing treatment at the Veterinary College and Research Institute in Orathandu in Thanjavur district.

Justices M M Sundaresh and N Satishkumar gave the direction on a PIL, filed by Clymont, seeking to restrain the temple officials from using the elephant for temple rituals.

Earlier, the Dean of the veterinary college informed the court that the elephant was recovering and could be sent to the camp.

 

The Judges also ordered that a veterinarian should check the health of the elephant.

The elephanthad run amok and trampled to death its mahout Rajendran and injured eight others in the temple some months ago.

It was firstnoticed in 2007 as an abandoned calf in a forest area and was sheltered at the Mudumalai.
