The Calcutta High Court today directed the West Bengal government and the State Election Commission to form representative groups to make surprise visits during panchayat poll campaigning to monitor that the court order was being complied with.

Justice Sanjib Banerjee said that the representatives from the two sides would also monitor the restricted use of motorcycles during campaigning.

The court order came two days after Justice Banerjee observed that there was a lack of coordination and communication between the West Bengal government and the SEC on the panchayat elections.

While the state government had submitted that it had made adequate force deployment during campaigning, the SEC said it was to the contrary.
