Press Trust of India Chennai
The Madras High Court today dismissed as withdrawn a PIL to declare the September 1, 1986 Tamil Nadu Legislative Council Abolition Act and its process as illegal and unconstitutional.

The first bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sathish K Agnihotri and Justice M.M. Sunderesh, however, gave liberty to petitioner K.Angamuthu, an advocate, to approach the appropriate authorities in the matter.

Alleging that the Council had been abolished for political reasons, he said even though parties promised in their election manifestos that they would take steps to set up the Council, they did nothing after coming to power.

He further claimed that because of the absence of the Council, successive governments were taking politically- motivated decisions without any speed break.
