A day after ruling that complainants cannot directly rush to it seeking registration of FIR without exhausting other options, the Madras High Court today disposed of 400 pending petitions with such a prayer.

The petitions had sought a direction under CrPC section 482 (inherent powers of high court) to various police authorities to register FIR on their complaints.

The court quoted the order passed by it yesterday which had held that petitions seeking direction for registration of FIR under section 482 of CrPC should be filed before it only after approaching the police station, the SP and jurisdictional magistrate concerned.

"In view of the above, these (400) criminal Original petitions are disposed of with liberty to the petitioners to follow the procedure laid down in the order and if necessary file a fresh petition," the court said in its order.

The court had also laid down steps to be followed by the police, magistrate and complainants.
