The Madras High Court today disposed of a petition by Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd after recording a report filed by the Superintendent of Police, Cuddalore, over bandobust provided in connection with the ongoing strike by various labour associations.

"I am satisfied with the detailed report submitted before the court by the District Superintendent of Police with regard to the security provided.... There is no need of any further orders in this regard," said Justice V Ramasubramanian before whom a petition seeking a direction to provide adequate police protection came up for hearing.

The judge after recording that about 654 policemen with wireless sets and other equipment have been deployed in connection with the bandobust as per the report filed by the SP, disposed of the petition filed by the management.

On the petition by NLC, Justice R S Ramanathan had granted an interim injunction till October 7, restraining members of nine unions from proceeding with the illegal strike.

The unions are demanding regularisation of services of all contract labourers and have been on strike since September 3.

NLC had contended that the regularisation process of contract labourers had started and, therefore the strike call by the unions was contrary to the Provisions of ID Act.

NLC had sought a direction to the SP and Collector of Cuddalore District to provide adequate police protection to the industry to run peacefully with staff and willing workers and contract labourers and suitably prevent the striking associations and members and outside supporters from gathering or assembling at the gates of the mines, thermal power stations, units and at the precincts of NLC township.

The SP in his detailed report to the court said the meeting of the striking wokers was allowed only at a distance of three km from the gate of NLC and also that sufficient police force had been deployed to control the situation.

Satisfied with the report, the judge disposed of the petition filed by the NLC management.
