HC disposes petition on selling of crackers on pavements

The Madras High Court today disposed off a PIL filed by social activist "Traffic" Ramaswamy alleging illegal cracker sale on the pavements outside the Island Grounds during Deepavali festival.

Ramaswamy in his petition said per the High Court's order crackers shops were allotted in the Island Grounds by adhering to all safety norms.

Stating that the license rules and safety norms cannot be compromised as it would endanger the lives of the citizens.

He submitted that since his efforts to contact the police over phone did not succeed he sent an email to them on the matter.

As there was no response on his complaint he approached the High Court, he said.
 

The court, after recording the submission of the counsel for police and the Corporation that no license was given to for selling the crackers on the pavements, in its order said "if that be the position then the representation/complaint requires to be inquired into and a decision taken on the it and communicated to the petitioner within a month from the date of receipt of the order", the judge said.
