Bombay High Court today directed the Pune Police to refrain from taking any coercive action against a young couple, who fear honour killing, in a case of cheating and theft registered by the girl's father at Pimpri police station after she and her boyfriend eloped and got married.

The division bench of Justices Naresh Patil and Revati Mohite-Dhere asked the prosecution to take instructions from the police regarding status of investigation, and adjourned the hearing till November 18.

The couple, through lawyers Mahesh Vaswani and S J Khera, have filed a petition seeking police protection and immunity from the alleged false case registered against them.

They say that they fear getting killed, or implicated in false cases, at the behest of the girl's father, who is in transport business and allegedly has 'contacts' in high places. They got married at a temple in Nashik on October 30 and since then have been in hiding.

However, the girl's father, who has filed a complaint about his daughter going missing, alleges that she took cash and jewellery worth Rs 18 lakh when she left.

According to the petition, the boy and the girl met five years ago while studying in a college in Pune.
