The Gauhati High Court today issued a notice to the Assam government on a PIL by eminent citizens on preservation and protection of the wetlands to stop artificial flood in the city.
The division bench of the court comprising Chief Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Arup Kumar Goswami issued the notice and fixed November 25 for further hearing.
The PIL, filed by Homen Borgohain and Nirmal Kumar Choudhury among others, was filed for preservation, protection and conservation of the existing wet lands like Bondajan Beel, Silsako Beel, Deepor Beel and Chola Beel.

These water bodies' current condition is very deplorable due to factors like illegal earth filling, dumping of waste, encroachment, construction activities and conversion of government peripheral land of the wetlands to private property by 'mafias' in clandestine connivance with some government officials, the PIL alleged.
The cause of artificial flood in Guwahati is due to non- protection of the wet lands of the entire city, it added.
