The Madras High Court today issued notice to the state government on a PIL seeking to fix 70 years as the upper age limit to hold the post of Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice Abdul Quddhose passed the interim order on the plea moved by the Association of Self-Finance Agricultural Colleges (ASFAC), based in Coimbatore.

According to the petitioner, the Indian Council for Agricultural Research headed by its chairperson SL Metha has prescribed a model Act to govern agricultural universities in the country.

The model Act prescribes 70 years as the upper age limit for the post of Vice-Chancellor.

Non-prescription of the maximum age limit for appointment of Vice-Chancellor gives unguided and unbridled power to make appointments to such posts which is illegal and violative of Constitution, the association added.
