The Uttarakhand High Court today issued a notice to the state government asking it to explain under what laws seven former chief ministers of the state were being provided free housing and other facilities like security and beacon light-fitted vehicles.

A high court bench comprising Chief Justice Barin Ghosh and Justice Umesh Chandra Dhyani issued the notice to the state government seeking an explanation within four weeks.

The high court issued the notice while admitting a petition filed by city-based NGO RLEK, which claimed these facilities were being provided to seven former chief ministers without any Act or law.

The NGO chaired by rights activist Padmashree Avdhash Kaushal had contended in the petition that a large amount of money was being spent to provide these facilities to the former chief ministers.
