The Madras High Court has allowed Tamil Nadu government to fill 14,150 vacancies in anganwadis and keep 3,000 posts vacant till disposal of a petition filed by Tamil Nadu Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union.

Modifying its status quo order, Justice K K Sasidharan made it clear that "in view of the submission made by the Special Government Pleader, the applications from Mini Anganwadi workers for appointment to the post Main Anganwadi Workers should also be considered along with others for appointment taking into account their continuous service for all these years."

The matter relates to the action taken by the State Social Welfare and Nutritious Meal Department to fill up 75 per cent of the vacancies in the post of Main Anganwadi workers which arose up to June 1, 2014 by direct recruitment which was challenged by way of a petition by the Union.

It sought directions from the court to first upgrade and post the members of their Union, who are now working as Mini Anganwadi Workers in nearby main anganwadi Centers in the existing vacancies.

The court, which admitted the petition on January 6 last, issued status quo and directed the government to file counter affidavit.
