The Madras High Court bench here today ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary among others on a petition seeking a direction for undertaking a publicity campaign on the evils of drinking liquor and the health hazard caused by it.
Issuing the notice, Justices Nooty Ramamohana Rao and S.S.Sundar sought the government's response to the PIL within eight weeks.
Public interest litigant K.K.Ramesh said it was necessary to sensitise people about the evils of alcohol drinking and protect them from the clutches of alcohol. It was causing not only health problems but social and family problems.

The government was more concerned about the revenue from the alcohol than welfare of the people, he charged.
He claimed that the quality of alcohol was also not good and posisonous chemicals were being added to it. The government should form an expert committee to certify the quality of alochol.
