HC moved over educational qualification of Tirupur Mayor

The Madras High Court today directed the Tiruppur District Election Officer (DEO) to send a report within two months to the State Election Commissioner with regard to the educational qualification of Mayor Visalajshi.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh, gave the directive on a PIL by B S Manivannan.

The court noted that though the SEC had directed the DEO on October 10, 2014 to hold an inquiry and send a report, it had not been done yet.

The petitioner alleged that candidate Visalakshi, who went on to become Mayor, furnished false particulars in the nomination papers for elections to the local bodies in 2011.

Believing the claim of Visalakshi that she was a graduate, the people had voted in her favour.

He later came to know through Right to Information Act that Visalakshi had studied only up to class 7.
