The city government was today directed by Delhi High Court to respond to a PIL seeking a direction to the Lieutenant Governor to comply with the recommendations of Lokayukta instead of holding fresh hearings on corruption issues against former municipal councillors here.

Issuing notices to Delhi government, the Commissioner of Police and also the former councillors, a bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath sought their responses by July 17 on a Public Interest Litigation filed by Common Cause, an NGO, seeking the court's intervention in the issue.

According to the PIL, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports and sting operations, the Lokayukta had recommended legal action against the councillors for their involvement in the corruption.

The LG, instead of forwarding the same to the Police Commissioner for action, has held fresh hearings and rejected Lokayukta's report and sent it back to the corruption watchdog for their re-hearing.
