The Madras High Court today ordered notice to Tamil Nadu government seeking to prohibit the practice of carrying priests in palanquin inside the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam.

Justices V Ramasubramanian and N Kirubakaran of the Madurai bench ordered notice to the Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments which manages the temple and several others in the state.

Petitioner Viswanathan also sought an interim order to prohibit the practice of carrying priests from the Srirangam temple to their residents in palanquin by other persons during the Brammaratham festival on November 23.

He said such a practice was against the principles of equity enshrined in the Constitution and also against the principles of Vaishnavam, and an insult to the idol.
