The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court today ordered a notice to the Commissioner of Refugees on a PIL seeking adequate amenities, including houses and water facilities, in refugee camps in the district.

Admitting the PIL by social activist C Anand Raj, a bench of Justice M Jaichandran and Justice R Mahadevan ordered the notice to the officials, including the Refugee Commissioner.

The petitioner referred to reports that four persons died in the last four years due to renal failure as the water available in Utchapatti camp contained poisonous chemicals. Ten refugees died due to kidney failure in Thiruvathavoor.

The houses in the camp at Thiruvathavoor were in a dilapidated condition and a child died on May 13, 2014 due to house collapse following rains. Officials had misused Rs 31 lakh allocated for providing infrastructure in the refugee camp at Thiruvathavoor.

While 490 families were shifted from Avaniapuram in Madurai to Thiruvathavoor, only 400 houses had been constructed. In Thiruvathavoor, houses were in a damaged condition and refugees lost their articles.

The petitioner sought adequate compensation from the respondent to the parents of Saranya who died due to house collapse in the Thiruvathavoor refugee camp and others who lost their articles.
