Madras High Court today directed prison authorities at Puzhal here to provide physiotherapy treatment to PMK MLA J Guru, who was detained under the National Security Act.

Passing an interim order on a petition by one Kaliaperumal, Justice K K Sasidharan directed the jail authorities to give physiotherapy treatment for a period of one week to Guru, as per the report submitted by the Dean Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here.

The judge also directed the Dean of the hospital to provide the MRI report to the Superintendent of Central Prison at Puzhal, so as to enable him to give appropriate treatment to Guru.

The judge had on August 2 had directed the Dean of the Hospital to constitute a medical team to examine Guru, who was detained under National Security Act on the order passed by Kancheepuram District Collector on May 10.

Large scale violence broke out in the northern districts of the state, after a youth wing conference of the PMK was held in Mamallapuram in April this year.

Guru, MLA representing Jeyamkondan Constituency was arrested for his provocating speech made at the conference and was later detained under the NSA.

Guru had earlier approached the High Court seeking to quash the detention order and in the mean time he filed another miscellaneous petition that he was suffering with heavy spinal cord pain and required immediate medical treatment.

The judge had earlier directed the jail authorities to take him to the government hospital here for MRI scan.
