The Madras High Court today directed the government to submit status report on the construction of check dam on Kollidam River between Kumaramangalam, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts.
The Division Bench comprising Justice R Mahadevan and Justice M Govindaraj gave the direction on a PIL filed by former panchayat President of Kadalangudi Village.
According to petitioner the Kollidam river has a rich water resource.

The water extracted through bore well were distributed to various villages through pipe lines and the river is going up to Vedharanyam and Muthupettai villages.
Because of water extraction through the bore wells the ground water level was depleted.
Late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had decided to construct a check dam near Kumaramangalam and Rs 400 crore was also announced for the project in 2014m he had submitted.
