A Delhi-based animal care centre run by Maneka Gandhi has been directed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to release 60 camels kept there after they were "rescued" in December last year while being transported through Haryana to Uttar Pradesh.

The high court directed Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre to release the 60 camels to the Station House Officer of Jhajjar in Haryana, who after getting the animals medically examined will hand them over to the owners if they are found fit.

The court also ordered Haryana police to register a case against the authorities of the shelter for being a "law unto themselves".

The high court on May 16 had directed the animal care centre, to immediately release the animals, seized by it in December last year, to their owners.

The camels were seized at Jhajjar on December 28, 2012 from Uttar Pradesh-based traders, who were booked under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act after People for Animals (PFA), an NGO, tipped off the police.

After the seizure, the cops had sent the camels to Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre in Delhi.

Later on when the traders came out on bail they moved the court seeking release of the animals.
