Madras High Court has directed the city's civic body to regularise the services of nine persons working at a burial ground at Thiruvottiyur.

Justice D Hariparanthaman directed the Chennai Corporation to regularise the services of 'vettiyans', treating them as Burial Ground Assistants, and to pay all arrears within eight weeks.

The order was passed two days ago on petitions filed by T.M. Anandan and eight others.

The Judge said the nine workers should be regularised as per the G.O. Passed in 2008 which paved the way for similarly placed persons in other zones of Chennai Corporation.

According to the petitioners, Thiruvottiyur was Zone I of the Chennai Corporation. In respect of other zones, orders had already been issued for regularisation of services of 'vettiyans'.

Therefore, the petitioners prayed for regularising their services also and made representations to the Corporation. As there was no response, they moved the high court.
