The Madras High Court today recorded the submissions of a petitioner whose brother was arrested by Andhra Pradesh police some months ago.

The petitioner Thangam of Chennai submitted that his brother Ravi was arrested by the Renigunta Urban Police of Andhra Pradesh on January 24 and taken away without informing the family members.

He sought a direction for issuing suitable guidelines to the Home Ministry, the Director General Police, Tamil Nadu, and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, for the purpose of effecting inter-state arrests.

When the matter came up, the counsel for the petitioner submitted that as already similar petitions were filed in the Supreme Court he will obtain instructions whether to pursue this litigation here.

Recording the submission, the First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, before which the PIL came up, said since already other courts were seized of the matter, "no purpose would be served by having multi-farious proceedings."

The court posted the matter for direction to June 9.

The petitioner alleged that the Andhra Pradesh Police, in the guise of inquiry about red sanders, smuggling took away people without following any guidelines and after keeping them in illegal custody for several days sent them back.
