HC reduces sentence

has confirmed conviction of a 33-year-old man for his involvement in a rape case, but reduced the sentence of the Sessions-cum-Mahila court of Tirunelveli district.

It also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the accused and said it should be paid to the girl.

A juvenile and one Durai of Tirunelveli attempted to rape an 18-year-old girl on Nov 21, 2001 when she was alone at her house.

Palavoor police in Tirunelveli arrested them and filed charge sheet under various sections of IPC.

The Juvenile Justice Board dealt with the case of the juvenile, while the case against Durai,was tried at the mahila court.
 

The trial court found Durai guilty under all the charges On January 29, 2007 and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 1000.

Durai appealed against verdict.

Justice S Nagamuthu, who confirmed the conviction, reduced the sentence.

The total fine amount of Rs 30,000 was ordered to be paid to the victim.
