Observing that crime against women was on the rise, the Bombay High Court today rejected the bail application of film professional Jerrit John, accused of trying to kill his former girlfriend.

John (35) was arrested in November last year for allegedly hurling a chemical on his 26-year-old former girlfriend and physiotherapist Aryanka Hosbetkar at her Worli residence.

According to police, John was angry after Hosbetkar dumped him as she learnt that he was already married.

He had approached the High Court after the sessions court refused him bail.

In the High Court, his application said he could not be charged for attempt to murder as Hosbetkar had received only minor injuries.

Justice S C Dharmadhikari, however, refused to accept the argument. If released on bail, the accused may threaten the victim, the judge said.

Further, the judge said,"Incidents of attack on women are on rise," rejecting the bail plea.
