The Calcutta High Court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Congress MLA Manas Bhunia, an accused in a Trinamool Congress worker's murder case at the time of West Bengal Assembly polls earlier this year.
A division bench comprising Justice Nadira Patherya and Justice Samapti Chatterjee rejected the anticipatory bail prayer of Bhunia, who had moved the court fearing arrest in connection with the murder of Joydev Jana in April this year.
The public prosecutor opposed the plea on the ground of the gravity of the matter and material found in the case diary, claiming that grant of anticipatory bail to Bhunia would hamper investigation in the case.
Appearing for the MLA, senior counsel Sekhar Basu submitted that the MLA has round-the-clock police security which would have known had any such crime been committed by Bhunia.
Seeking bail for the politician, Basu said that tower location of Bhunia's mobile had been found to be at a different place from the alleged place of occurrence of the crime.
Bhunia was recently been made the Public Accounts Committee chairman in the West Bengal Assembly.
