Rejecting permission sought by PMK for holding a public meeting here, Madras High Court today pulled up the party for not controlling its cadres during its recent 'Chittirai Thiruvizha' in Mamallapuram, despite an undertaking, which led to large-scale violence at Marakkanam.
When PMK's appeal against the denying of permission for holding a meeting at Shastri Nagar came up for hearing, the First Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Kumar Agrawal and Justice M Sathyanarayanan asked why the party did not comply with the undertaking given by it earlier.
The bench further questioned as to how can one call himself a true leader if he cannot control his own cadres.
Referring to the undertaking took by the PMK for the Mamallapuram meeting on April 25, it said, "We know what happened to the undertaking you gave for Mamallapuram meeting. How can you give an undertaking now."
The bench adjourned the matter for July 15.
Justice K K Sasidharan had on June 8 refused to permit the PMK to hold a public meeting at Shastri Nagar citing the recent violence at Marakkanam and Dharmapuri allegedly targeting Dalits.
PMK had moved the court after police refused to give permission for holding the meeting.
Pointing out violence triggered by a PMK rally at Marakkanam, police rejected his application.
PMK's counsel filed the petition saying the Marakkanam incident had nothing to do with the party, as 'Chittirai Thiruvizha' was organised by Vanniyar Sangam.
