The Allahabad High Court today reserved its judgement on a petition challenging the appointment of Lieutenant General Zamiruddin Shah as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, a post he has been holding for more than three years.

A division bench comprising Justices Dilip Gupta and V K Mishra reserved its judgement on the petition filed by one Syed Abrar Ahmed, who has alleged that General Shah had been appointed to the post despite not being eligible for the same.

According to the petitioner, the UGC had laid down in 2010 that only "a person of academic excellence with a teaching experience as professor of not less than 10 years" could be appointed as the vice chancellor of a University and General Shah fell short of the requirements.

The court, after hearing arguments put forward by counsel of both sides, reserved its judgement.
