The Madras High Court has restrained the Indian Maritime University here from filling the post of Associate Professor in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and ordered issue of notice to it.

In his interim order, Justice D Hariparanthaman directed the University to allow M S Ravi Sharma to work as Associate Professor in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in the school of Naval Architecture at Chennai, who resigned his job in the US and attended the interview for the post.

Ravi Sharma had challenged withdrawal of his appointment by the University on the basis of a Shipping Ministry order.

The University had issued advertisements for recruitment of various faculty members in September 2012, pursuant to which Sharma applied for the post.

He attended the interview through video conferencing on November last and an order of appointment was issued on December 4 to join duty on or before March 3 this year.

The petitioner said in the meantime, the Ministry of Shipping constituted a Faculty Assessment Committee and kept in abeyance joining of selected candidates and issued a new set of directions due to which he was not able to join duty.

The petitioner submitted that there was no discrepancy in the selection by the University for faculty members, and there was no deviation in the recruitment process. But on the basis of the order issued by the Shipping Ministry, the University withdrew the appointment order on June 14 following which the petition was filed, he said.
