Taking suo motu cognizance of reported paper leak in Common Entrance Test (CET), Jammu and Kashmir High Court has issued notices to the state government and Board of Professional Entrance Examination (BOPEE), asking them to submit their explanation within two weeks.

A bench comprising Chief Justice M M Kumar and Justice D S Thakur issued the notices yesterday to the state government through Chief Secretary and Secretary BOPEE.

Last month, the BOPEE had to cancel the Chemistry paper and postpone the Biology paper of the CET due to its negligence which led to the leakage of the Biology paper a day ahead of its scheduled exam.

The BOPEE took the action after it was reported that invigilating staff at one of the centres in Srinagar had on June 22 distributed Biology paper instead of Chemistry paper.

Due to the mess up, thousands of candidates aspiring to get into various professional courses like MBBS, BDS, Engineering, BVSc and BSc (Agriculture) were left in great distress even as the BOPEE rescheduled the examination of both the papers on July 27 and 28.

Meanwhile, state unit of CPI(M) today expressed surprise over the government's "causal approach" on CET paper leakage and said "weeks have passed and authorities are yet to come out with facts behind awful incident having a huge impact on thousands of students across the state."

"The leakage of the paper is a cause for concern and we demand a thorough probe into the functioning of the institution (BOPEE). An impartial probe will fix the responsibility and as such lead to punishment to the culprits," State Secretary of CPI(M) M Y Tarigami said.

He said the leakage of question papers have "exposed the integrity" of institutions of the state like BOPEE.

"Such type of a causal approach has marred the future of thousands of talented and deserving students, and it will definitely affect the future of our state by promoting undeserving candidates through illegal means," he said.

The government must come clean on the issue as soon as possible and a time bound inquiry should be ordered in this regard, he demanded.
