The Delhi High Court has sought reports from city government, DDA and Traffic police on the status of a three-lane flyover being built parallel to the one existing at Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Marg on Outer Ring Road here.

It has also sought a report on how far the authorities, including Delhi Development Authority (DDA), have progressed with regard to coming up with functional alternative routes to tackle traffic congestion during building of the flyover.

"In the meanwhile, the counsel for respondent Nos. 2 (Delhi government), 5 (DDA) and 7 (Traffic police) shall give a report with regard to the current status," a bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva said while listing the matter for further hearing on September 9.

The court has sought status of the project as well as that of the alternative routes as it had earlier told the various authorities associated with the project that if they do not "de-congest the traffic to and from the airport", the work will not proceed further.

The court was hearing a plea by the residents welfare associations of Vasant Vihar challenging the Public Works Department's (PWD) decision to build a three-lane flyover parallel to the single-lane flyover at RTR marg.

The court had earlier also restrained DDA from cutting down trees without permission of the appropriate authority while carrying out the construction of the new flyover.

Prior to that, the court had allowed PWD to go ahead with its project.

On October 28, the court had said that "the alternative measures discussed for de-congesting the traffic to and from the airport, particularly, at the T-junction joining Nelson Mandela Marg and the Outer Ring Road as also the entry point after Ryan International School from Mehrauli Mahipalpur Road to the DDA road shall be made operational within two weeks."

It had said the authorities shall make an endeavour to make operational every route they intend to use during diversion of traffic while building the flyover.

Vasant Vihar residents associations have sought that a six-lane flyover be built in the same location by demolishing the existing one while PWD plans to build a three-lane elevated road from Munirka to Signals Enclave, which will also run parallel to the RTR Marg flyover.
