The Gujarat High Court today stayed the demolition of the 19th century Nazarbaug palace in Vadodara.

The palace is currently in the possession of Sangramsinh Gaekwad, a member of the former royal family of Vadodara.

Justice R D Kothari today stayed the ongoing demolition, and issued notices to the state's chief secretary, Vadodara Municipal Corporation, Archaeological Survey of India and Gaekwad's son Pratapsinh.

Sanjeev Joshi, co-convener of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and Indian Institute of Architects (IIA), has moved the court with a PIL against the demolition.

The court today directed the Gaekwads to maintain status quo until the next hearing, scheduled for June 3.

"Nazarbaug palace is a heritage building as it belongs to the era of the Gaekwad rulers and stands as a landmark," advocate Dipen Desai, the petitioner's lawyer, argued.

The process to include it in the list of heritage structures was underway, advocate Desai pointed out.

Sangramsinh's family reportedly plans to construct a commercial-cum-residential complex spread over 1.75 lakh square feet area by razing the palace which was built in 1850 when Gaekwads were the rulers of Vadodara.

The family has contended that the palace is in a dilapidated condition and would not survive the coming monsoon.
