The Madras High Court Bench here today stayed an order of the District Education Officer cancelling the approval granted for teachers appointment made in an aided private school in 2012 on the ground they had not cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

Admitting petitions by K Thangaraj and another person challenging the order, Justice K.Ravichandrababu ordered notice to the officials of the state education department seeking their counter within four weeks.

The petitioners, who were appointed as BT Assistants in the school, submitted that based on the order of the Director of School Edcuation issued on November 7, 2013, directing cancellation of all appointments in pursuant to the G.O.Which said teachers should possess TET certifcate, their appointments had been cancelled by the DEO.

However, they had time till 2017 to obtain TET certificate.

The petitioners contended that less than four per cent of the teachers had cleared TET. No teacher with TET qualification was available now for appointment in recognised private schools. Hence, if the rule of TET was insisted on, all teachers' positions would remain vacant and students would be badly hit, they argued.
