The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today stayed the nomination of two teaching staff to the Syndicate committee of the Madurai Kamaraj University.

Justice K.K.Sasidharan stayed the July 10 last nomination of an Assistant Professor and Associated Professor, admitting a petition by two senior teaching staff who challenged it on the ground that it was against the MKU Statutes Act 1965 that stipulated "nomination should be done according to seniority."

One of the petitioners, A.Meshach Ponraj, Associate Professor(Reader) of School Information Technology, sought to stay the appointment of G.Kumaresan, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Genetics School of Biological Sciences, saying he was four years junior to him.

Besides, seven syndicate members had made a written representation to the MKU Chancellor, objecting to the nomination of Kumresan. The MKU Faculty Association also had opposed him.

Similarly, K.Sadasivan, Assistant Professor objected to the nomination of V.Vidhya Chellam to the syndidate.

He said Vidhya Chellam was appointed only last year whereas he was in service from October, 1991. The nomination was against statutes, he contended.

The two petitioners wanted the newly-nominated members to be restrained from attending the syndicate meeting tomorrow where their nominations could be validated.
