The Madras High Court today stayed the notification on selection process for filling of vacancies of Assistant Professors to Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore.

Justice K.K. Sasidharan, before whom the petition filed by Assistant Professor Vasant and five others came up, in his order, said "there is prima facie material in the case of the petitioners."

Earlier, an order of removal from service was served on them by the University. They had challenged the removal order in the court and secured a stay.

Apart from the stay granted by the court in the matter of removal of petitioners, there was a government order which specifically stated there was no need of selection process for the appointments to be made.

Against this background, the University has issued a notification with regard to the selection of candidates for the posts of Assistant Professors.

"Hence, there shall be an interim stay on the proceedings of selection process based on the notification until further orders," the court said.

The petitioners wondered when there was a government order not to proceed with the selection process, how did the University issue such a notification for selection of candidates to the posts of Assistant professors.

Hence they sought a direction to quash it and in the meantime pass an interim order staying the notification issued by the University for selection process.

After granting interim stay on the notification, the judge posted the matter for further hearing to April 8 and directed the government to file the counter by then.
