The Allahabad High Court today asked Director General, Medical Health of Uttar Pradesh, to conduct an inquiry into the reported birth of a child on the street in front of a primary health centre from where the mother was turned away after being refused admission.

A division bench comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Dilip Gupta passed the order on a PIL filed by Deeksha Dwivedi, who had sought to draw the court's attention towards the incident that reportedly took place in the remote Jasra tehsil of Allahabad district on August 28.

The petitioner had alleged that when the matter came to light, the district Chief Medical Officer conducted an inquiry, but took no action beyond "scolding the doctors on duty for their negligence".

The court, while directing the DG, Medical Health, to conduct an inquiry and submit report within a month, fixed November 14 as the next date of hearing.
