Governor Dr Kamla Beniwal had earlier recommended that Jani be sacked.

"A larger bench of Gujarat High Court, consisting of Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya, Justice A L Dave and Justice V M Sahay today made it clear that the appointment of Gajendra Jani was totally illegal," SU Senate member Dharam Kambaliya said.

Kambaliya had challenged Jani's appointment.

"The court agreed with Governor's recommendation that Jani did not posses proper qualifications and experience," he added.

Jani was appointed as Registrar in 2007, and Congress-affiliated members in the Senate were demanding his removal from the beginning. Dr Kamla had appointed three-member inquiry committee, and on the basis of its report, she had asked the then Vice Chancellor Dr Kamlesh Joshipura to sack Jani.

However, the VC turned down Governor's order in February this year, saying that syndicate members had decided not to follow governor's recommendation.

The High Court today also rejected Jani's request of stay to the ruling, Kambaliya added.
