The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday upheld the capital punishment awarded by a session court in Mainpuri to Sovaran Singh Prajapati for murdering his wife and minor daughter.

Prajapati had brutally assaulted his wife, Mamta and daughter with a rock and a bamboo stick-- leading to their deaths-- enraged by his wife's refusal to give him money to buy alcohol.

A first information report was registered at police station Korhal in Mainpuri on June 30, 2014.

The two-judge bench of the high court comprising Justice Sudhir Agarwal and Justice Om Prakash-Vll dismissed Prajapati's appeal against the death sentence awarded to him by the sessions court.

Confirming the death penalty, the court said that the case was "rarest of rare" due to the manner in which the victims were murdered by the accused.

The court further observed that the killings were brutal, grotesque and diabolical.
