The Madras High Court today upheld the election of K R Periakaruppan of DMK to the state assembly in the year 2011.

Dismissing the election petition filed by his nearest AIADMK rival from Tiruppur constituency in Sivagangai district Rajakannapan, Justice K Ravichandrabaabu rejected the contentions raised in the election petition.

Rajakannapan had alleged that Periakaruppan, a minister in the previous DMK government, had committed irregularities during the polls held on April 13, 2011.

In the 2011 assembly elections, Periakaruppan, who contested as a DMK candidate, defeated his nearest rival AIADMK candidate by 1584 votes. He had secured 83,485 votes against 81,901 votes of his rival.
