Pronouncing its verdict on a petition on death of a four year-old school boy due to the negligence of the driver of a school bus, Justice Dilip B Bhosale further directed police and RTOs to comply with the Supreme Court guidelines on trasportation of school children by school buses.

The guidelines included the mandatory presence of a qualified attendant in every school bus.

The court directed police, the Traffic Commissioner in particular and the RTOs to submit a report in this regard by January 16 and to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

The parents of Mohammad Faizal, a student of Bright School at Thanisandra who died on June 21 last, had filed a plea seeking compliance of guidelines issued by the apex court by schools and the police.

The petitioner had also sought action against the school authorities and adequate compensation for the boy's family.

Faizal was about to get down near his house when the door of the bus hit him, resulting in his falling down. Seeing this, the driver panicked and lifted the injured boy and after putting him back into the vehicle, drove to a particular spot and ran away. Cries by two other school children who were inside the bus alerted passers-by who rushed a bleeding Fazal to hospital but he died en route.

The parents subsequently moved the High Court in September last after a case of death due to negligence was registered by police.
