Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, the Punjab Police continued its crackdown on policemen allegedly involved in drug trade, dismissing a head constable and cancelling its earlier order of extension in service for an inspector.

Head Constable Jatinder Singh has been removed from government service by the Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) with effect from July 5, said an official spokesman.

In the case of Inspector Rajinder Kumar, acting on the recommendation of the SSP Gurdaspur, the IGP, Border Range, Amritsar issued orders of compulsory retirement, thereby withdrawing extension in his service, with immediate effect, according to the police spokesperson.

The spokesperson further revealed that police had received information on June 14 from sources that Aditya Mahajan of Dhariwal was involved in smuggling of drugs, allegedly in connivance with Inspector Rajinder Kumar and his gunmen, head constable Jatinder Singh. Consequently, both of them were transferred to the Police Lines, Gurdaspur.

The spokesperson further said that the SHO of Dhariwal was directed to conduct a raid to verify the information, during which, on June 16, Aditya was apprehended and 10 gm heroin and 50gm of intoxicated powder were recovered from him.

Since the allegations against the police officials were of serious nature, the SSP Gurdaspur formed an SIT on June 29, under the supervision of SP/Investigation, Gurdaspur, and two DSPs, to verify the role of these delinquent police officials and investigate the matter thoroughly.

All the accused were taken on production warrant, and were interrogated by the SIT.

After verifying the facts, the SIT submitted the report to the SSP Gurdaspur that Inspector Rajinder Kumar and Jatinder Singh were aware of the activities of the accused and were in full knowledge that the accused Aditya Mahajan was indulging in drug trafficking.
